Water Garden Plants, Koi & Supplies
When I started with my Koi Pond ten years ago, I would buy new water lilies each Spring. My pond is rather small, 1200 gallons, and I live in Minnesota. The pond freezes in the Winter which kills the hardy water lilies. Five years ago, I learned how to winter-over the hardy lilies. It’s very simple. Before my pond freezes, I pull out the potted lilies. With a stream of water from a garden hose I carefully remove the plant. Cut off all the lily pads, including the stems, from the rhizome. Keep all of the white colored roots in tacked while carefully pulling out the dead roots which are black. Wash the rhizome and roots and carefully wrap in several layer of wet paper towel. Place the wrapped plant in plastic bag and refrigerate until Spring. (I keep my plants in the back of a drawer in the refrigerator.) When Spring arrives, unwrap and wash off the rhizome and roots. Then pot it up so that the rhizome is at a 45° angle with the growing tip pointing up and reach the surface of the potting material. Push two or three fertilizer tablets into the soil near the roots. Finish the potting with pea gravel and pebbles. Position the pot about 12” below the water surface. As the plant begins to grow, lower it to 12” to 18” below the surface.
You can get water lilies by mail order. The Lilypons Water Gardens catalog has a huge selection of water lilies shown in full color, other aquatic plants, and water gardening supplies. And, the catalog is packed with helpful information. Many products are available for managing your pond. To keep your water lilies blooming, they’ll need at least 6 hours of sun, more is better, and plant food. Lilytabs are easy to use and need to be pushed into the soil ever couple of weeks. In the catalog, you’ll find a handy tool, called an Inject-a-Tab, for reaching the plant from a distance. There’s also aquatic planting media available as well as plant stands. One section of the catalog is devoted to a variety of medicines to cure fish ills, water conditioning products for keeping fish healthy and water testing supplies.
Then, there are many choices of fish for your pond. Lilypons catalog offers Koi, Butterfly Koi, Japanese Fantail Goldfish, comets, and Shubunkins.
