Self-Watering Pots, Seed Starting & Gardening Gear, and Composting Supplies by Mail Order
Gardeners Supply Company puts out a great catalog with ideas for doing things better. Seed starting systems, composting supplies and self-watering pots are areas where this catalog excels.
Take the self-watering pots. I tried a couple of them two years ago and they worked so well I ordered more last year. My favorite plant for container gardening is the chartreuse Sweet Potato Vine called Margarita. On my deck I have two spots that get just the right amount of sun. Sweet Potato Vines require three things — sun, water, and warmth of at least 50 degrees F. With those conditions, they grow fast nto a huge bushel-barrel presentation that poeple can’t believe. I keep the contained atop two pillars located at the corners of my deck in an area that’s elevated over 20 feet. The pillars stand about a foot above the railing. So the massive chartreuse vine cascades toward the deck surface which makes a very impressive appearance. I live in Minnesota and the summers are plenty warm for the vine. But do they need a lot of water. On really hot days, they would drink a couple of gallons of water two or three times a day. And that became a huge problem. If I wasn’t around to tend to their thirst, the plants would wilt. Even though a big drink helped, that treatment stresses a plant so that it cannot perform to perfection. It was a real chore keeping up with the water requirments. So when I came across the self-watering pots in the Gardeners Supply catalog, I ordered some immediately and put them to work with my Sweet Potato Vines.
In addition to the Self-Watering Pots, they offer a Conversion Kit whereby you can turn any pot into a self-watering planter.
Another strong suit with this catalog is Composting Supplies. Compost is often called Black Gold because is adds so much the the growing media. Gardeners Supply has a variety of composters: Kitchen Compost Crock, Wire Bin Composters, Compost Tumblers, Gravity-Feed System, and the Worm Chalet Composter. Let Red Wiggler Worms help with the composting. You can order 2 pounts of Red Wigglers (they’ll multiply to 8,000 in a few months). The worms digest you kitchen scraps into nutrient-rich plant food. Once the scraps are converted to compostthe worms move to the next bin in search of food and go to work there. You’ll find the Coir Worm Bedding in the catalog, too.
If it’s possible for you to collect rain water, the catalog offers three choices: the Rainwater Urn, the Rain Barrel (75 gallons), and the English Rain Barrel. It’s a great alternative to turning on the hose. And the plants will love it!
Rather than buying plants each spring, seed catalog offer a far greater selection. And it’s so important to get the seedlings off to a good start. Seed starting supplies in this free catalog help insure a good start. Germinating Mix is pH adjusted, insect-free, and contains trace elements to stimulate root growth. Self-watering Transplant Pots are reusable. Tabletop Grow Light and adjustable as the plants grow. And the Deep-Root Seedstarting System results in stronger transplants. Check out the Organic Pest Controls, the Upsidedown tomato Planter, the Indoor Living Wall System, and the Weather-Proof Wicker Outdoor Furniture.
And it you’ve got a question, this free catalog is backed up with customer service people that are real gardeners.
