Mail Order Tropical Plants for Home & Garden

Container plants bring color, fragrence and an exotic interest to your home, deck or patio, and garden.  And those in the Logee’s catalog are all tropical plants.  Keep ‘em inside for the winter and bring them outdoors in the summer.  If you’re looking for African Violets, this isn’t the place.  But for something more unusual, Logee’s Tropical Plants has a lot to offer.

For patio, sunroom and garden, there’s a huge selection.  I like fragrant flowers.  But I’ve never tried any of the brugmansia (Angels’s Trumpets) varieties — 10 are offered in the catalog I’m looking at.  Most of them reach from 3′ to 6′ at maturity and provide a sweet nighttime fragrance.  The species brugmansia has an interesting twist — the pure white trumpet  reach 12″ in length and become a flower-within-a-flower.  A new hybrid, Angel’s Dream, starts blooming at just 12″ tall and its mature height is only 1′ to 2′.  This hybrid won the MGA Green Thumb Award for 2009.  Another new plant is gardenia jasminoldes “Frostproof”.  It’s a prolific bloomer of fragrant 2″ to 3″ flowers.  And, as its name implies, it is hardy to Zone 6.  Lookiing for an Asian influence, check out bambusa multiplex ” Hedge Bamboo”.  Mature height is 8′ to 15′ but pruning and pot size can regulate mature height.  An interesting plant is the fragrant “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” (brunfelsia australis) which produces an abundance of blooms which start out with a rich blue-violet and fade to white over several days.  Another award winner is cliva “Victorian Peach”.  Clivas ( I have four clvia miniata that are at least 20 years old) with only a little light (north window OK) and require very little care (that’s why mine are 20 years old).  I like them as a green plant that blooms once a year.  Last year, I ordered several hibiscus from Logee’s.  I live in Minnesota so they come in for the winter.  My favorite is “High Voltage” which produces huge 9″ flowere that last 2 days.  In addition to the dinner-plate size the blooms feature a deep burgundy red center that that softens to pink, then a dusky lavender to an outer band of white.  And the nice thing about hibisus is that the blooms keep coming and coming.  Logee’s offers 17 different hibiscus in the Annual 2009 catalog.

There are a lot more plants for patio, sunroom and garden, but let’s move on to Vines and Climbers”.  “Rex Begonia Vine” is a lovely tendril climber.  Bougainvillias in beautiful pinkd, reds and yellows.  There’s a package of three plants called the Everblooming Bougainvillea Collection” with colorful names — Raspberry Ice, California Gold, and Double Red.  I like the reds.  A very deep red is the “Red Passion Flower” (passiflora miniata).  Mandelvilla sanderi “Sun Parasol” is another deep red climber that’s perfect for a container in a sunny location.

Begonias abound in the Logee’s catalog.  I like the one called “Escargot” with spiral leaves marked in bands of silver and green.  Others include: Raspberry Swirl, Fireworks, Curly Fireflush, Marmaduke (maple-shaped neon-yellow leaves speckled withrich burgandy), China Curl, Midnight Sun, Kismet (compact Angel Wing), and many more.

Not all Orchids are tropical.  There are over 32,000 orchid species  found all over the world.  Logee’s offers 10 hybrid tropical orchids.  Cattleyas, miltonia, dendrobium are some of the choices.  Some are fraagrant.  Others are award winners.  And all are colorful beauties that are easy to bloom.

Cacti and Succulets are called “The Easy Growers”.  Cactis flowers are striking and have names like Just Beautiful, Staarfish Flower, Unforgettable, Strawberry Splash, Vista Sun, Red orchid, Blue Paradise.  You’d better take a look at the color pics in the Logee’s Catalog.

Indoor and Windowsill Plants.  Butterwort (pinguicula pimuilfora) is a planat I keep with my orchids because it traps insects with a sticky film the leaves.  It blooms too.  The “Sensitive Plant” (mimosa pudica) is fun for the kids.  When touched the leaves move by collapsing downward.  After an hour so so the leaves return to their untouched form.  Streptocarpus (Cape Primrose) are a great windowsill plant.  They’re easy to grow and reward you with tons of blooms that keep coming and coming.  All kinds of colors too — reds, purples, pinks, violet-blues, cranberry, white and, my favorite, “Purple Panda”.
