Mail Order Catalog for Dog & Cat Supplies
So you got a new puppy. What’s next? Puppy food, food & water bowls, a crate, dog bed, grooming gear, spot & stain remover, gates & doors, bark control, treats, eye care, ear care, flea & tick control, name tags, nail care . . . . Well, the list goes on and on. And it’s nice that all of this and more is packed into the free catalog from Doctors Foster and Smith (Drs. F & S)..
When we got our Standard Poodle (Chloee), we had no idea of all the products available until we got started with the catalog from Drs. F & S. Initially, we used all the basic stuff , chews to keep her from destroying our furniture. But what you’ll find in the catalog are dental chews, treats and toys. Not only do they help save the furniture but they help with the dental care. Speaking of dental care, there are all kinds of prodcuts in just that category: dog toothpaste, dog toothbrushes, and toys that work like toothbrushes.
Toys, that’s a suabject in itself. I’ll bet Chloee has over 100 toys and she’s not even three yet. The catalog I’m looking at has eight pages devoted to toys. Many of which you will enjoy. There are brain teasers, tough toys, tug toys, wiggly toys, balls of all sizes, teaching toys, and more. Most toys squeak and some talk. But just like your puppy, they don’t talk back!
Ear infections are very common with Standard Poodles and I’m sure many other breeds. To get started with ear infections, you’ll probably want to visit your Vet. The catalog helps here too. There’s a two page section on working with you Vet. And, if you Vet provides a prescription, you can order it from Drs. F & S. Now, after an ear infection is resloved, you’ll probably want to establish an ear care routine. We use an ear rinse followed by ear powder on a weekly basis. With Standaard Poodles, the ear cannel gets filled with hair which creates an environment that promotes ear infections. We have our groomer clean out as much hair from the ear area as possible. If you can to so some of that yourself, you can order a Hair Puller tool from the catalog. Have you Vet coach you on using it with your pet.
For feeders and waterers, we prefer stainless steel bowls because you can eliminate the bacterial build-up with routine washing. If you dog has long floppy ears like Chloee, consider the bowl racks that elevates the bowls. Some are adjustable so you can get the best feeding height.
Cages, we call ours a crate, are very important with a puppy. Chloee learned the word “crate” and had no problem with it. In fact, it became a safe haven for her. After up-sizing a couple of times, Chloee reached the point where the crate was not needed. The high sided dog bed so of replaced it.
Travel gear. The catalog’s got it. Chloee like to ride around in the car when I’m out running around. There are a couple of dog seat belt systems offered in the catalog. The one I chose in very easy to use and Chloee has no problem with it. I just put the harness on her and it attaches to the seat belt. I always keep her in the back seat, away from the pasenger airbag.
Because we live in Minnesota, there are a few items, all offered in the catalog, geared for our winter weather. To get the mail, it is a mile and an half round trip. If it’s really cold, Chloee bundles up with a doggie snowsuit and footgear. She got used to it after questioning it at first. Our driveway is somewhat steep, so I use an ice melt, a pet-friendly version from the catalog. Ordinary road salt irritates doggie feet, so be sue to use a pet-friendly version.
When we walk, Chloee is always on a short lead (4′) with a special collar. The short lead is much better for control of your dog. In fact, it is required by ordinance in our area. The walking collar we use will never break or open-up inadvertantly. It slips over her head and can only tighten so far which cannot choke her.
